Researchers may be looking for participants to be matched up to play a game or interact with each other in some way throughout the survey. We have some tips to help with data collection for these types of studies:
- Be upfront and clear in the instructions of the study.
You can use the description and instruction area when setting up the study on Connect to tell participants about the nature of the study. If they need to wait a certain amount of time before they are matched up with a participant, explain this so they do not exit the survey before another participant arrives. If the study is only live for a certain amount of time (ex: 3 hours) include a statement in this area to let them know. - Offer bonuses.
Paying above the site baseline ($7.50/hour) can incentivize participants. If you are also offering a bonus, let participants know about this in the study title, description and/or instructions. For example, if participants can earn up to a $10 bonus, you can include a statement in the initial study description that says, "Participants may be bonused up to $10 for taking this study." - Pay above average wages.
Participants are more likely to accept to take the study, not just if there is a bonus, but also when the study's overall pay is above average. Average wages are close to our baseline pay ($7.50/hour), so most interactive studies should pay above minimum wage. - Have a Research Assistant or someone to help out if any issues occur. Include a phone number or email they can message or even tell participants to use the conversations area of Connect to send a message if they experience technical difficulties.
- Conduct a Live Interview Study. Have the researcher join a meeting beforehand and walk through the study with participants together.
