How to Integrate your Survey with Connect

Researchers can pick the survey platform they would like to use to host their survey. Common platforms include Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, and Alchemer (formerly SurveyGizmo). If you are using a different platform than these, it is likely still compatible with Connect.

In order to run a Connect study, you need to make sure you are collecting Connect IDs and following one of our completion methods: fixed completion code or completion redirect. Connect IDs are needed in order to match up responses and approve/reject/bonus participants.

If you have forgotten to collect Connect IDs before launching the study, you can get them retroactively by adding the "participantId" capture to your survey platform (if supported). If you cannot get these IDs retroactively but have collected IP addresses, please email us at connect-support@cloudresearch.com with your project ID and we can match up IP addresses to Connect IDs.

If your survey platform does not have the ability to automatically collect Connect IDs through something like embedded data for the variable “participantId”, then you will need to ask an in-survey question that allows participants to input their ID within your survey. If your survey platform does not have the ability to automatically redirect participants to our custom completion URL, then you will want to utilize the completion code option here.

How do I add a Completion Code to my Survey?

Simply display a code on the last page of your survey. You can include a message like the following:

Here is your completion code: HDAM2782Res. Please input this code in Connect in order to submit.

Participants will then have to copy this code and paste it into the text box under this study on their account.

*Make sure this code matches the one you inputted in Connect under the study's settings*

How to set up Embedded Data in Qualtrics to Capture Connect IDs

1. Click on SurveyFlow

2. Click on Add a New Element Here

3. Click on Embedded Data

4. Enter participantId into the field (case sensitive –notice the “I” is capitalized).

5. *Optional: Repeat above steps to capture the Assignment Id using assignmentId variable and the Project Id using projectId variable.

*The assignmentId and projectId collection is not required. AssignmentId is a unique ID we give each participant as soon as they enter the survey. It is not the same as their Connect ID. Project ID is the ID that your project is under on Connect.*

How to set up the Completion Redirect in Qualtrics

1. Click on SurveyFlow.

2. Click on Add a New Element Here

3. Click on End of Survey.

4. Click on Customize

5. Select the Redirect to a URL option and paste the completion redirect URL we give you on Connect when setting up the study.

How to program the Connect ID Capture in SurveyMonkey

1. Click on Design Survey tab and then Logic

2. Click Custom Variables

3. Set up the first variable by completing the following fields

Variable Name (required) - This will appear in the URL string itself. The Variable Name cannot contain any spaces. (Maximum 50 characters)
- A. Enter participantId (all lower case except for the "I" before "d") as your variable name
Label (optional) - This will appear in your data file, so create a label that will help you track what information the field contains. (Maximum 250 characters)

4. Click Save

5. Optional: Repeat above steps to capture the Assignment Id using assignmentId variable and the Project Id using projectId variable

How to set up the Completion Redirect in SurveyMonkey

1. Go to the Collect Responses section of your survey

2. Click on the name of the collector and access the collector options. You may need to click Show advanced options

2. Choose the following option and enter your completion redirect link (given to you in the Completion area of your study in Connect)

How to program the Connect ID Capture in Alchemer

1. Add a new action at the beginning of your survey. By 'Hidden Value' click 'Add'

2. Under the field 'Populate with the following' you should see 'Select a Merge Code' written in blue

3. Click on 'Select a Merge Code' to display a dropdown box. in the dropdown box, select 'About the Respondent'

4. After clicking 'About the Respondent', you will see 'URL Variable' on the right. Click 'Insert' next to 'URL Variable'

5. In the 'Populate with the following field', replace the xxx with 'participantId'. Select 'Save Action'

Please Note: The hidden action value that this process sets up must appear at the beginning of your survey. Participants will not see this block since it is hidden. The survey will still start with the first block after the hidden action.

6. Optional: Repeat above steps to capture the Assignment Id using assignmentId variable and the Project Id using projectId variable

How to set up the Completion Redirect in Alchemer

1. Scroll down to the Thank You page (end of survey). Add a new action by clicking 'Actions' and then look for 'URL Redirect', click the green 'Add' button

2. Customize the redirect link

a. Change from 'http' to 'https' under the URL dropdown list.

b. Enter your completion redirect link (given to you in the Completion area of your study in Connect)

3. Scroll down on the same page to 'Fields to pass' section. Select 'participantId' from the dropdown list. Then select 'add field'
