Once you have followed our Completion Branches section of this article here, it is now time to program your Qualtrics survey to have branching logic so partials can get tracked properly.
Step 1: Remove any pre-existing Skip Logic
In the survey builder area, you may already have programmed screening/kick off questions to have skip logic which redirects participants to an end of survey message, exiting them out of the survey before reaching the end. You will want to remove any skip logic for these scenarios since branching logic is necessary to redirect participants to the partial redirect URL or code.
Step 2: Navigate to the survey logic tab
Before programming the survey to have the branching logic for partial completes, at this step you can also add embedded data to the top of the survey flow to auto capture the variables: participantId, projectId, and assignmentId. The variable participantId is used to capture Connect IDs which is required so you can match up responses to participants. Please see this article here which explains how to auto capture these variables.
- Under the block or question that could trigger a partial complete, select "Add Below" and then click on the Branch button.
- Select "Add a Condition" to program what answer choice(s) would trigger someone to get the partial redirect URL or code.
- Select from the "Select Question" dropdown which question will have the branching logic.
- Select from the "Select Choice" question, what answer choice(s) would route someone to the partial redirect URL or code.
- Once that is set to your liking, hit the green "Ok" button to save.
- Under the Branching Logic section select "Add a New Element Here" and select End of Survey.
- Select "Customize" on the End of Survey block.
- Select "Override Survey Options" from the pop up.
- If using the partial redirect URL option, select the "Redirect to a URL" box.
- In the textbox to the right, paste in the partial redirect URL we gave you for this scenario in Connect when you created the branches. You can locate this in the Completion Branches tab for the study in Connect.
- If you are using a partial completion code instead, select the "Custom end of survey message" box.
- Use the dropdown to select from your saved messages to pick a message that has the partial code in it. If you do not have a message already populated in your library with this code, simply scroll to select "New Message." This is where you can create a new message that has the code in it. For example, if the partial code is XYZ123, you can generate a message: "Thank you for your time. Please submit in Connect with the code XYZ123." Hit the green "Save" button once the new message is generated and selected.
- Select the blue "Save" button.
- Repeat these above steps for any other partial complete questions you may have.
- For full completion participants, add another End of Survey block after the final survey question.
- Select to Customize this block to have the Redirect to a URL or Custom end of survey message option selected. This completion setting would be for those who pass all screening questions and make it to the end of the survey, fully completing the task. On the Connect side this redirect URL and code would be located in the Completion Branches tab for the study under the "Default" section. Our article here goes over this as well.
Step 3: Apply the changes and Publish the survey
- At the bottom of the survey logic page select the blue "Apply" button.
- Navigate back to the Builder tab from the left navigation bar.
- Select the blue "Publish" button in the top right corner.
This applied the changes and made them live to the survey so the most recent updates are saved.
Step 4: Check that the survey is working
Now that all embedded data, branching logic, and survey settings have been saved, we recommend running through the survey to ensure the branching logic is working properly. To do this, open up a tab in your browser with the survey URL. Go through the survey to check for the multiple completion types.
