When participants enter your project, they leave the Connect site. To help keep track of who completes your project, you will need to use either an end of study redirect or a completion code.
Redirect URL
The easiest way to track who completes your project is with an end of study redirect. This redirect will send people who reach the end of your project back to the Connect app. When people re-enter the Connect webpage, we will capture a completion code that proves they completed your project.
To program an end of study redirect, copy the Redirect URL provided at the end of the Create a Study wizard. Then, program this URL as the end of survey action in your survey platform.
Note: If you are using Qualtrics, you should configure the redirect within the survey creator. There is an "End of Survey" block at the bottom of the survey builder. Changing the end of study instructions here changes the default settings for all participants. The completed redirect should look like the image below.
Can I use this Completion Redirect to Kick Off Participants for In-Survey Screening or Failing Attention Checks?
The simple answer is NO. The completion redirect should only be used at the end of the survey after participants have completed all questions/tasks. Connect now supports kick offs for in-survey screening or data quality checks with partial payment as long as you utilize our Partial Completes feature. Please follow the bottom of this article which goes over our Partial Redirects feature.
Completion Code
If you choose, you can provide participants with a completion code at the end of your project rather than use a redirect URL. To use a completion code, you need to program the last page of your survey to present participants with the completion code shown on Connect. Participants will then enter this code as evidence that they have completed your project.
Completion Branches
When conducting surveys, researchers often encounter situations where participants may partially complete a survey and then leave without finishing, need to screen for specific demographics, or kick off those who fail an attention check question. In such cases, researchers can choose to redirect these participants to a URL or Completion Code where they can still submit for partial payment or no payment at all for failed attention check questions.
*We cannot provide any guarantees on feasibility for studies where partial completes are used for in-survey screening.*
When to Use Completion Branches for Partial Completes
- To Ensure Fair Compensation: By offering payment to partially completed participants this ensures that participants are compensated fairly for the time and effort they invest in the survey. By guiding participants through the survey and compensating them based on the percentage completed or their time being screened, researchers can maintain fairness and transparency in payment distribution.
- To Maximize Survey Completion Rates: A partial completion redirect/code with payment can help maximize survey completion rates. By offering compensation for both partial and complete survey submissions, researchers motivate participants to continue and complete the survey, ultimately increasing the overall response rate.
- Efficiency: A partial completion redirect/code can be used to screen out participants who fail attention checks. Researchers may pay them a low amount for still reaching a certain point in the survey. For recommendations on attention checks, please follow this article here.
When to Not Use Completion Branches for Partial Completes
- Payment Is Fixed: If researchers have a fixed payment structure regardless of survey completion status, implementing redirects may not be necessary. In such cases, participants receive compensation based on predetermined criteria, such as eligibility using our demographic targeting on the site or participation, rather than the percentage of the survey completed.
- At the End of Surveys: Participants who complete all survey questions should not receive a partial redirect/code. Instead, the end of the survey should be programmed to have the full study’s completion redirect or code.
How to Set Up Completion Branches for Partial Completes
1. In the Completion Branches area during set up, select "Add Branch".
2. You will need to label the branch and select "Partial complete" as the Process Submissions option.
If you are using this partial complete to screen out for failed attention checks, you can label it as something like: "Failed Attention Checks". For specific demographic screening you may be doing a label like: "Does Not Qualify" will work. These partial redirects can also be used to track payment for participant progress. For example, if someone only made it to 1 part of the survey after 10 mins, you can redirect them to pay them for their time.
3. The Message is what you will display to participants once they are screened out. As for Est. Time in Mins, this is how far into the survey this partial redirect will occur. The payment set must be in-line with our site norms ($7.50/hour minimum and a recommended $10/hour) in order to save the study. Max Partial Submissions refers to how many participants you would like to get this redirect. For example, if only 50 people should complete part 1 of the 3 section survey, set the Max Partial Submissions to 50.
4. The bottom of this section will show the redirect or code you can program the specific section of the survey that has this screen out to have.
Please follow the redirect section for your specific survey platform of this article here which goes over programming of custom redirect URLs.
5. Once you hit Save, the partial redirect configuration will be visible under the full completion study settings.
You can set up the study to have multiple partial redirect scenarios configured. Please repeat the above steps to add more branches for partial completes to the study.
The pricing page will show the cost including all partial redirects you set up.
How Do I Know who Partially Completed my Study?
In the study's Manage area, all participants who fully or partially completed the survey via the redirect/code will appear. Those who have a “Partial Complete” status reached a partial complete redirect/code you used in-survey. You should also review your data file to see what exact point each participant reached before they were redirected.
Full Complete Options
Beyond partial completion options, there are two additional settings designed specifically for participants who have fully completed your survey. These options provide you with flexibility in how completions are processed:
When to Use These Options
- Track Different Workflow Paths: Identify which participant groups followed specific paths through your survey
- Manage Bonus Eligibility: Easily determine which participants qualify for bonuses based on their completion path
Available Options
Manually Review
Manually reviewing participants allows you to check their data first before approving or rejecting them in the Manage section. Participants set to Manual Review and reach this completion redirect or code will enter a pending state in Connect. You should then review their data in your survey file to see if you would like to approve or reject them. For more information on how to approve or reject participants please follow this article here.
Approve and Pay
Approve and Pay should be used when you want participants who submitted via redirect or the correct completion code to be automatically paid. There is no review process since as soon as a participant submits, they are paid. The automatic approval method on Connect is a feature designed to expedite reviewing and approving participant submissions for research studies or tasks. It is important to note, once a participant is approved there is no way of reversing it. We recommend using manual review to ensure you are paying participants who you verified provided you with usable data.
