Naming your project
The basic information section begins with naming your project. This name is publicly attached to your project and visible to participants.
Using an internal name
If you'd like to use an internal name for your project--one that participants do not see--you can do so. Research teams often find internal names useful when they want the naming convention to be meaningful but do not want the public name to reveal details about the project.
Project Instructions
Here, you can provide participants with a short description of your project. We recommend something descriptive that does not introduce self-selection bias (e.g., "This study contains questions about your attitudes and values").
The project instructions box is also a great place to describe what is required of participants, especially if what is required goes beyond the norms of simple survey.
Examples of things that should be disclosed include:
- Being asked to download an app or file
- If the study requires lots of open-ended writing
- If tasks in the study are tedious
- If the study collects potentially sensitive personal information
- When the study involves audio of video recording of responses
The idea behind this communication is to give people enough information to decide whether the project is something they want to do before they accept it. These instructions should remain brief using something like bullet points, if possible.
Devices and Project Requirements
Further along the lines of communicating to participants what is necessary for a project, you can set limits on the type of device participants can use. Simply checking the boxes next to desktop, mobile, and tablet change which devices participants are allowed to use within the project.
You can also inform participants if they need to have audio, a camera, a microphone, or download software to complete your project. This information will be displayed to participants before they accept the project so they can decide whether the project is something they want to do.
